Happy Bithday Linux

On August 25th 2011, it was a big day for all Linux users. Its 20th birthday, a major milestone for the Linux family.

20 years ago on 25th August 1991, Linux Torvalds wrote to comp.os.minix a UseNet newsgroup using Minix a UNIX Operating System.

Im doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, wont be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. Id like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).

Ive currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that Ill get something practical within a few months, and Id like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I wont promise Ill implement them :-)

Linus (torvalds@kruuna.helsinki.fi)

PS. Yes its free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as thats all I have :-(.

He just started it has his hobby, but Linux has grown from what it was then back in 1991. From big and small hosting companies, ATMs, smart phones and even the common desktop/laptop users, you can see Linux almost everywhere. Its an apple of an eye equally for a so called techie or geek, developers and common computer users. Now days laptops too come with preinstalled Linux OS.

Just like picking a ice cream flavor of your choice, you can pick your favorite Linux distro RedHat, Ubuntu, Fedora, Mint, Mandriva, Puppy Linux and the list goes on. These have further custom spins of Linux. Youll have a version of Linux even to support on computer with the lowest specifications.

People have lost the fear of using Linux. Its no longer just a command line window without graphical user interface. You can have anything with just a click faster than on Windows. Bug fixes and updates are much faster. Common release cycles happen on between a 6 months to 1 year which keeps its upto date.

Linux has hope for the future to come, a sun shining far away. One day we can hope to see Linux along with the top industry players like Apple and Microsoft.
Best wishes for the future. Belated birthday wishes Linux.

How to enable PPP feature in a VPS/Container

To enable ppp feature for a VPS, first we need to check wether the modules ppp_async and ppp_deflateare loaded in the kernal or not. You can check this by executing the following commands.

# modprobe ppp_async
# modprobe ppp_deflate

or You can list the active modules using the command lsmod.

# lsmod | grep ppp
ppp_deflate 39168 0
zlib_deflate 52760 1 ppp_deflate
ppp_async 45184 0
crc_ccitt 6337 1 ppp_async
ppp_generic 20165 6 ppp_deflate,ppp_async
slhc 30561 1 ppp_generic

Steps to enable PPP feature.
1. # vzctl set VEID –features ppp:on –save
2. # vzctl set VEID –devices c:108:0:rw –save
3. # vzctl exec VEID mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0
4. # vzctl exec VEID chmod 600 /dev/ppp
5. Restart the VPS using the command # vzctl restart VEID

To check PPP module

1. Log into the VPS
# vzctl enter VEID
2. Execute the command

If PPP module is working, then you should receive a message asking for the password or some garbage charecters. If you see something else, then something is wrong.
