Greylisting
Greylisting is a simple way of blocking emails. in Grey listing, what it checks is that if the mail is legitimate or not. If there is a prior relationship between the sender and the receiver, the message get delivered without any issue. If the sender is suspicious and unknown the message gets temporarily rejected with 451 error message.
How this works:
As we discussed earlier, if no relation is establised between the sender and the recepient, there are chances of getting a mail to be rejected with 451 bounce back error.
A retry will be there since its a temporary rejection.
A server with Greylisting enabled, mainly checks for the following information.
1. email address of sender
2. IP address of host
3. Recepeint email address.
This is commonly known as triplet. It is usually cached when a mail delivery gets rejected. If the mail is still getting rejected, the triplet get retires from its cache.
Blacklisting
Blacklists is another method of keep the Internet clean from unsolicited emails or spam’s. The ISP’s usually make use of a blacklist database which they make use to filter incoming email messages. This has been enabled so as to encourage and increase server security.
In this process, sometimes legitimate email users might also gets blocked.
How to identify if your mail server is blacklisted?
There are few lists where the spammers search for. Those are open relay and open proxy. The spammers check for such open relays and if found, it sends large quantities of emails and thereby causing the mail servers IP address to be marked as spam. The blacklists servers run few scripts to confirm if they are involved in spamming. If your IP is found as spammer, the IP will be blacklisted.
Most of the ISP’s like Yahoo, Hotmail etc, rejects the message that are send from the blacklisted IP’s or from blacklisted mail servers. It is advisable to always keep an eye on your servers IP for any kind of such activities. Such activities terribly affects your companies reputation and communication with your users.

You would either need to contact the owner of your domain or the blacklist service to delist your IP from the list.

Once blacklisted, please note that the delisting might take few days to get processed.
Whitelisting
If you are greylisted or blacklisted, you would need to get whitelisted so that you can start to use the mail services again. This process mainly deals with keep the spam filters allow certains email address or IP from being getting blacklisted or grey listed. If your mail server IP was reported for a spamming activity, possibly you would be blacklisted on ISP’s databases. If you are a spammer, your mail will either gets bounced back or end delivering in the spam or junk folder of an email address.
The spam filters comes with the options of blaclisting and whitelisting. If you whitelist a server IP or an email address, the future emails from those servers or addresses will be considered as legitimate.
