Backup configurations, scheduling – configuring incremental backups, and selecting storage destinations in JetBackup

by SupportPRO Admin

1. Setting up Backup Configuration

JetBackup offers multiple backup options and configurations for flexibility. To start:

a. Log into cPanel/WHM

  • Access the WHM (Web Host Manager) or cPanel account where JetBackup is installed.

B. Backup Configuration Setup

  • Once installed, navigate to JetBackup in WHM >> Plugins>> JetBackup.
  • From JetBackup you can click on Backup job>> Click on Create Backup job.
  • We need to provide the following details:
  1. Need to provide the Backup job name to identify if there is a bulk JetBackup created.
  2. Always choose the owner as root ( By default it is set to Root).
  3. We need to make sure that the destination is created before the Backup job is set up.
  4. After selecting the destination You can choose the Backup type, There are 3 types of the backup type a)Accounts and b) Directories.
  5. Accounts backup as named will include the backups for all the accounts and Directories backups will be created for particular selected Directory of the account.

3. Choosing Storage Destinations

JetBackup supports different backup destinations. To set these up:

a. Navigate to Backup Destinations

  • Go to JetBackup > Backup Destinations in the WHM or cPanel interface.

b. Select Storage Types

  • Choose a destination for backups (Local, Remote (SFTP, FTP, etc.), Cloud services like Google Drive, Dropbox, or Amazon S3).

c. Add New Storage Destination

  • Click Add New Destination.
  • Input the required credentials and connection details for your destination (FTP/SFTP login, access keys for cloud storage, etc.).

d. Set Backup Destination Priority

  • If you have multiple destinations, prioritize where JetBackup will store the backups first (e.g., local server, then to cloud storage).

e. Test Connection

  • Once added, test the destination connection to make sure everything works properly.

f. Apply Changes

  • After setting up your destination, you can assign it to a particular backup schedule or manually select it for a backup job.

3. Configuring Incremental Backups and explanation of Archived and Compress Backup job.

We have 3 types of backup structures.

  1. Archived: Backup data in uncompressed archive structure  (.tar file formats)

Uncompressed backups are faster to generate but this requires more disk space.

  1. Compressed: Backup data in compressed structure (.tar.gz file format) Compressed backup uses less disk space but it takes more time to complete the backup.
  1. Incremental backup: Incremental backups are great for saving space and resources. To set this up:

Note: If the storage destination is remote, JetBackup stores a copy of the backup in the workspace directory before transferring to the destination for archived and compressed jobs. This is not the case for incremental.

a. Enable Incremental Backups

  • In the Backup Configuration section, make sure Incremental Backups are enabled.
  • Choose a retention period, specifying how many days/weeks you want to keep incremental backups.

b. Configuring Retention Settings

  • Set up how long you want to keep full backups and incremental backups.
  • You can choose to keep a certain number of full backups, or JetBackup can automatically delete older backups to save space.

c. Backup Path Configuration

  • Incremental backups will typically be stored alongside full backups, with incremental changes saved after the first full backup.

For ex: Incremental backups will only copy files that have changed or are new since the last full backup.

If you activate ‘backup retention’ JetBackup will create a “point-in-time incremental backups”, which will use as little space as possible (using hardlinks). So a 30 days backup retention, of a 2GB cPanel account, will only consume 2GB + 30 Days of new/changed files (** At this time, MySQL is fully dumped, as it doesn’t support incremental backups).

For best performance, it is recommended to use a server that is dedicated only to backups, and not a web server that also holds your backups or uses a separate HD device for backups if your backups are local.

4. Setting Up Scheduled Backups

To schedule your backups, follow these steps:

a. Navigate to JetBackup’s Scheduling Section

  • Go to JetBackup > Backup Configuration or Scheduled Backups (depending on your version).

b. Create a New Schedule

  • Choose the backup type (Full, Incremental, Differential).
  • Select the frequency: Daily, Weekly, Monthly, etc.
  • Set the time for the backup to run (make sure it’s a time when server load is low if possible).

c. Apply the Schedule

  • After selecting the desired options, apply the schedule.
  • You can add multiple schedules for different types of backups or clients.

5. Monitoring and Adjustments

  • After everything is set up, check the Backup Logs to ensure everything is running as scheduled.
  • If needed, adjust retention settings, schedules, or destinations to better match your requirements.

If you are still struggling with the server backup setup, SupportPRO can assist in backup configuration on JetBackup with optimal settings.
